Hi and welcome! My name is Richard Petford and I’m the guy behind Learn How to Sail Now. I was lucky enough to be introduced to sailing (*yachting) at the age of seven by my non-sailing parents. I started with an Optimist and went through youth classes, a stint in 470 sailing and finally the Laser. When I was a teenager, my ambition was to go to the Olympics; I made it as far as becoming national school’s champion, and from there started instructing beginners and racers. This website is all about bringing together the best quality sailing lessons, clothing and equipment in one spot. I’m always trying to make the site better, so if you have any comments, or suggestions for what you’d like to see on the site, I’d love to hear from you. *Just to clear something up; ‘sailing’ and ‘yachting’ mean the same thing here (just be careful not to spell it ‘yatching’)!
The best sailing gear and gifts
I’ve searched the internet for the best gear for beginners, through to race winners. Whether you’re shopping for yourself, or for a Christmas or birthday sailing gift for someone else, you’ll find the best prices here.
Visit your local sailing clubs
Try as many forms of sailing as you can – that way you’ll discover which is best for you and meet plenty of great people along the way. Start with visiting the sailing clubs in your area – their websites and also go there on a sailing day, ask questions (do they have a ‘learn to sail’ program?) and have a look at their noticeboard for used boats for sale in their sailboat listings. Incidentally, many of the yachting products listed on this site are also ideal to use for canoeing, kayaking, SUPing (stand up paddle boarding) and windsurfing.
I’ve selected excellent sailing gear and clothes that have all proven to perform well, either from my own personal experience, or from trusted others. You’ll find top sailing brands including Gill Marine gloves, shorts & jackets etc, Helly Hansen boat shoes & coastal trousers and Sperry Top-siders deck shoes.
